2023 George L. Paige Scholar of Excellence Recipient

At Lifting Minorities, every milestone matters. Each scholarship awarded represents more than financial support—it reflects belief, opportunity, and a commitment to legacy. In 2023, the organization reached a defining moment by awarding its very first scholarship recipient and launching the George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence. That recipient was Mark Betts, a first-generation college student whose journey embodies the heart of the Lifting Minorities mission.

Lifting Minorities was founded on the belief that access creates opportunity, and opportunity changes lives. Rooted in the founder’s personal story, the nonprofit exists to uplift students who have the talent, drive, and resilience to succeed but may lack access to generational resources. The George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence was created to honor excellence, perseverance, and the pursuit of higher education—values that align directly with Mark’s story.

Being able to award the first George L. Paige Scholarship was both humbling and exhilarating for the Lifting Minorities team. It represented years of vision, planning, and community support coming together for a single purpose: to invest in a student who would carry the mission forward. Selecting the first recipient carried special significance. This scholar will forever be part of the organization’s history, setting the tone for future recipients and helping establish the scholarship's legacy.

Mark Betts was a natural choice.

Hailing from a small town in Halifax County, Virginia, Mark grew up understanding the value of hard work, determination, and community. Like many students from rural areas, he faced limited exposure to college pathways and fewer local resources. Despite these challenges, Mark set his sights on higher education, determined to chart a new course for himself and his family.

As a first-generation college student, Mark stepped into unfamiliar territory. Navigating applications, financial aid, and campus life required courage and self-advocacy—qualities that Lifting Minorities actively seeks to support and celebrate. First-generation students often carry the dual responsibility of pursuing their own dreams while paving the way for those who will follow. Mark embraced that responsibility with humility and resolve.

Mark began his college journey at Longwood University, where he laid the academic foundation for his future. His time at Longwood helped shape his confidence as a college student and affirmed his ability to succeed in a rigorous academic environment. Like many students, Mark’s path was not linear. Recognizing his evolving goals and opportunities, he later transferred to the University of the Pacific, demonstrating adaptability and a willingness to make bold decisions to pursue long-term success.

This transition reflects one of the core principles behind the George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence: growth. Excellence is not defined by a single moment or institution, but by the courage to evolve, reassess, and move forward with purpose. Mark’s journey underscores that success can take many forms, and resilience often requires change.

2023 George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence Recipient

Awarding the scholarship to Mark in 2023 marked a powerful “first” for Lifting Minorities. He was not only the inaugural recipient of the George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence but also the organization’s very first scholarship recipient overall. That distinction carries weight, and Mark has embraced it with pride and gratitude. His story is now woven into the fabric of Lifting Minorities, serving as a reminder of why the organization exists and who it strives to serve.

For Lifting Minorities, investing in Mark was about more than helping cover educational expenses. It was about affirming his potential, validating his journey, and sending a clear message: you belong in higher education, and your dreams matter. Scholarships like the George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence are designed to ease financial burdens while also providing encouragement and visibility to students whose stories deserve to be told.

Mark’s impact extends beyond his own academic journey. As the first recipient, he set a precedent for future scholars—demonstrating that students from small towns, first-generation backgrounds, and underrepresented communities can and will succeed when given access and support. His achievement inspires future applicants and reinforces the importance of community-driven investment in education.

As Lifting Minorities continues to grow, the organization remains grounded in moments like this one. Mark Betts’ story represents the beginning of a legacy—one built on opportunity, excellence, and belief in the next generation. The George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence will continue to support many students, but Mark will always hold a special place as the first recipient.

We are proud to spotlight Mark Betts and celebrate his journey. His success reflects the mission of Lifting Minorities in action: lifting students, empowering futures, and building a legacy that lasts far beyond a single scholarship award.

Mark's story is just the beginning. Together, we can continue to lift one, and in doing so, lift all.
