At Lifting Minorities, we believe that education changes lives, but character changes communities. Every year, the George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence recognizes students who embody academic achievement, servant leadership, resilience, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others. This year, we are proud to celebrate Kimora Johnson and Kaiyah Stephens, two exceptional graduates of Halifax County High School in South Boston, Virginia, whose journeys reflect the very values that defined the life of George L. Paige.

George L. Paige believed that true success was measured not only by personal accomplishments but by the lives we impact along the way. His legacy reminds us that leadership begins with service, compassion, and a willingness to invest in future generations. Kimora and Kaiyah are carrying that legacy forward in remarkable ways.

Kimora Johnson will attend Old Dominion University, where she plans to major in Political Science with aspirations of becoming a public servant and advocate for those whose voices often go unheard. Throughout high school, Kimora consistently demonstrated that leadership is more than holding a title—it is showing up for your community. Whether serving in student government, volunteering with civic organizations, participating in local elections, supporting church ministries, mentoring younger students, or dedicating countless hours to community service, she has built a reputation for integrity, humility, and compassion. Her recommendation letters repeatedly described a young woman whose quiet determination, selflessness, and commitment to others make her a natural leader who uplifts every community she joins.

Kaiyah Stephens will attend Radford University, where she plans to pursue a degree in Nursing with the goal of becoming a pediatric nurse. Her desire to care for children is a natural extension of the compassion she has already demonstrated throughout her life. Kaiyah balanced rigorous academics with leadership as captain of the varsity cheer team, years of dedication to competitive dance, National Honor Society membership, and meaningful volunteer service through hospital programs, nonprofit organizations, and community outreach. Those who know her best consistently describe her as kindhearted, hardworking, resilient, and deeply committed to serving others. Her educators believe she possesses not only the academic ability to excel but also the heart to make a lasting difference in the lives of patients and families.

Although Kimora and Kaiyah have chosen different career paths, their stories intersect in powerful ways. Both have embraced leadership, demonstrated excellence inside and outside the classroom, and consistently chosen service over self. Their accomplishments remind us that success is not simply about reaching college, it is about preparing to return to our communities equipped to create meaningful change.

As Kimora begins her journey toward public leadership and Kaiyah prepares to answer the call to healthcare, they also become ambassadors of the George L. Paige legacy. Their achievements represent more than individual success—they represent hope for Halifax County, inspiration for younger students, and proof that when communities invest in promising young leaders, entire generations rise.
