At Lifting Minorities, we believe that when opportunity meets determination, extraordinary things happen. Every scholarship we award represents more than financial assistance; it is an investment in the next generation of leaders who will create lasting change in their communities. That is why we are proud to announce Kellen Travers as the 2026 recipient of the Lee A. Murphy Jr. Legacy Scholarship Fund.

A graduate of J.R. Tucker High School in Henrico, Virginia, Kellen will begin an exciting new chapter this fall at Virginia Tech, where he plans to study Nanomedicine. His ambition to pursue a field at the intersection of science, engineering, and healthcare reflects the kind of bold thinking that our mission seeks to encourage: empowering students of color to pursue higher education, break barriers, and become innovators in fields where diverse perspectives are needed most.

As the founder of Lifting Minorities and a proud Virginia Tech alumnus, seeing Kellen continue his journey in Blacksburg is especially meaningful. Virginia Tech helped shape my own leadership, purpose, and commitment to serving others. Knowing that another Legacy Scholar will walk the same campus, discover new opportunities, and build upon his remarkable foundation is both a full-circle moment and a reminder of why this scholarship exists—to create pathways that extend far beyond graduation.

Kellen has distinguished himself through academic excellence and an unwavering commitment to service. Throughout high school, he successfully completed the rigorous Advanced College Academy, earning college credits while balancing demanding coursework, leadership roles, and extracurricular activities. Teachers consistently described him as intellectually curious, disciplined, and exceptionally prepared for the challenges of higher education.

His accomplishments extend well beyond the classroom. Kellen embraced leadership through service, helping organize community initiatives, mentoring peers, and contributing to organizations dedicated to improving the lives of others. Whether advocating for public health initiatives, participating in theater productions, supporting robotics, or engaging in community outreach, he demonstrated that leadership is defined not by titles but by consistent action and genuine care for those around him.

What stands out most about Kellen, however, is his character. Those who have worked alongside him describe a young man who leads with kindness, humility, and purpose. He is known for encouraging others, asking thoughtful questions, embracing challenges with resilience, and creating positive energy wherever he goes. Even while navigating an academically demanding schedule and long daily commutes, he remained committed to excellence and never lost sight of the importance of lifting others along the way.

Kellen embodies everything the Lee A. Murphy Jr. Legacy Scholarship Fund was created to recognize: academic achievement, leadership, service, perseverance, and a desire to create opportunities for others.

As he begins his journey at Virginia Tech, we are confident that Kellen will continue making an impact—in the classroom, in the laboratory, and throughout every community he joins. We cannot wait to watch him grow into the scientist, leader, and changemaker he is already becoming.
