At Lifting Minorities, our mission is rooted in the belief that access, opportunity, and intentional support can change the trajectory of a student’s life—and, ultimately, the future of entire communities. Every scholarship we award represents more than financial assistance; it is an investment in potential, perseverance, and purpose. It is with immense pride and excitement that we spotlight Brooklyn Williams, the first-ever recipient of the Lee A. Murphy Jr. Legacy Scholarship, awarded in 2024.

The creation of the Lee A. Murphy Jr. Legacy Scholarship was deeply intentional. This scholarship was established to honor the power of legacy—how determination, education, and service can ripple across generations. It reflects the values that define Lifting Minorities: resilience in the face of adversity, excellence in academic and professional pursuits, and a commitment to lifting others along the way. Awarding the very first recipient of this scholarship was a milestone moment for our nonprofit, and Brooklyn’s story embodies everything this legacy represents.

Brooklyn Williams is a native of Fairfax, Virginia, and from an early age, she demonstrated both academic curiosity and a strong work ethic. Her educational journey began at the University of Virginia, where she laid a solid foundation for her future in technology. Recognizing her evolving goals and aspirations, Brooklyn made the bold decision to transfer to Vanderbilt University, a move that speaks to her self-awareness, courage, and commitment to growth.

Today, Brooklyn is pursuing a degree in Computer Science, a field that is shaping the future of nearly every industry, yet still lacks adequate representation from historically marginalized communities. Her choice of major reflects not only her aptitude for problem-solving and innovation but also her desire to be part of the next generation of leaders driving technological progress. Brooklyn’s journey into computer science aligns powerfully with Lifting Minorities’ mission to help close opportunity gaps in high-impact, high-growth fields.

When Lifting Minorities awarded Brooklyn the Lee A. Murphy Jr. Legacy Scholarship in 2024, it marked more than the start of a new scholarship—it marked the beginning of a legacy in action. As the inaugural recipient, Brooklyn set the tone for what this scholarship stands for: academic excellence, ambition, integrity, and the courage to chart one’s own path. Her achievement is a reminder that representation matters and that when students are supported, they can reach spaces where their voices and talents are needed most.

The excitement surrounding this scholarship’s first award was felt throughout the Lifting Minorities community. From our board members and volunteers to our supporters and partners, there was a shared sense of pride in seeing this vision come to life. The Lee A. Murphy Jr. Legacy Scholarship was designed to inspire students to dream boldly while honoring the importance of family, perseverance, and giving back. Brooklyn’s selection affirmed that this scholarship is doing exactly what it was intended to do.

At its core, Lifting Minorities exists to lift students who have the drive to succeed but may not always have equitable access to resources. We understand that talent is universal, but opportunity is not. By investing in students like Brooklyn, we are creating pathways that enable brilliance to flourish—especially in spaces where it has historically been underrepresented. Brooklyn’s academic journey, from Virginia to Tennessee and from aspiration to action, is a powerful example of what happens when opportunity meets preparation.

As Brooklyn continues her studies at Vanderbilt University, we are confident she will excel academically and make meaningful contributions both within and beyond the classroom. Her pursuit of computer science places her at the intersection of innovation and impact, and we look forward to seeing how she uses her skills to shape the future. Brooklyn represents the promise of what this scholarship—and Lifting Minorities as a whole—was created to support.

The Lee A. Murphy Jr. Legacy Scholarship is more than a financial award; it is a symbol of belief. Belief in students like Brooklyn Williams. Belief in the power of education. And the belief that when we lift one, we lift many. As our first recipient, Brooklyn will forever hold a special place in the story of Lifting Minorities, and her success will continue to inspire future scholars for years to come.

We are honored to celebrate Brooklyn Williams and proud to support her journey. Her story is just the beginning of a legacy that will continue to grow, one student at a time.

Brooklyn's story is just the beginning. Together, we can continue to lift one, and in doing so, lift all.
