George L. Paige
Scholarship of Excellence

The George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence was announced in September 2022 and created in recognition of George L. Paige's 40+ years of commitment to the Halifax County, VA public school system. In honor of his commitment to supporting and preparing students for higher education, this scholarship provides college-bound seniors attending Halifax County High School, with financial assistance to attend a four-year college or university.

The Lifting Minorities Board of Directors (Lee Murphy, Jr., Syrinda Paige, Craig Keys, Gabrielle Brown) was joined by the following area personnel for the announcement: South Boston Mayor, Edward Owens, Halifax County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Amy Huskin, former Halifax County Superintendent of Schools, Valdivia Hall, Halifax County Schools Director of Secondary Instruction, Dawn Miller, along with close family and friends.

Overview

The George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence provides assistance to college-bound high school seniors based on demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. Preference given to students with an expressed interest in pursuing a career in education.

Award

Up to $25,000

Base Criteria

  • Be a graduating Halifax County High School senior

  • Be accepted and pursue a degree at a four-year college or university

  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA

  • Demonstrate financial need

Guidelines

The scholarship will be dispersed in equal payments throughout the recipient's four-year program. Semester reviews and annual renewals will be performed. Students must maintain no lower than a 3.0 GPA.

The 2024 scholarship application window is closed.

Lifting Minorities proudly recognizes Mark Betts as the first George L. Paige Scholarship of Excellence recipient! Mark will receive $25,000 to support his four-year journey at Longwood University, where he will major in Biology and run track. We are incredibly proud of you and excited about your journey, Mark!
